It is also a prime destination for kayaking near Grand Rapids, with excellent paddling and paddleboarding at Van Buren State Park.

Close to Grand Rapids, far from ordinary.

Both destinations are straightforward drives from cities across the Midwest. From Grand Rapids, Saugatuck-Douglas is about 45 minutes via I-196 South, and South Haven is about 55 minutes via I-196 South. From Kalamazoo, South Haven is about 45 minutes via I-196 West, and Saugatuck-Douglas is about 1 hour via US-131 North. Chicago is roughly 2 hours to South Haven and 2 hours 15 minutes to Saugatuck-Douglas via I-94 to I-196.

Saugatuck-Douglas is served indirectly by Amtrak’s Pere Marquette line — ride daily from Chicago to Holland, Michigan, just 20 minutes away, then grab a rideshare the rest of the way. South Haven doesn’t have a direct stop, but Kalamazoo is served daily by Amtrak’s Wolverine and Blue Water lines from Chicago, just 45 minutes from South Haven. Either way, it’s a relaxed, car-free option worth considering.
