Douglas sits along the shores of Kalamazoo Lake in the heart of West Michigan’s lakeshore region — a charming, unhurried town with world-class paddling right out the door. Kayak or paddleboard the Kalamazoo River, or head 25 minutes down the shoreline to Van Buren State Park in South Haven for wide sandy beaches and some of the best beach paddling in the region. However you get here, the water is waiting.

From Grand Rapids, Saugatuck-Douglas is just 45 minutes via I-196 South — a scenic drive with a beautiful finish along the lakeshore. South Haven is about 25 minutes further down the coast, roughly 55 minutes from Grand Rapids. Kalamazoo is about 1 hour from Saugatuck-Douglas and 45 minutes from South Haven. Chicago is roughly 2 hours 15 minutes to Saugatuck-Douglas and 2 hours to South Haven via I-94 to I-196.

Chicago travelers have a great car-free option: Amtrak’s Pere Marquette line runs daily service from Chicago to Holland, Michigan — just a 20-minute drive from Saugatuck-Douglas. From either station, a rideshare or rental car gets you the rest of the way with ease.
